Honest comparison · Canada · 2026
We sell practice for both tests, so here's the neutral truth — starting with the one fact that can change your decision for Canada: If you're going for PR (Express Entry), the choice is narrower than people think: IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP General and PTE Core — but NOT PTE Academic. The costly, common trap is prepping PTE Academic (the university test) when Canada PR needs PTE Core (the immigration test).
Neutral by design — AlmiWorld sells both, so we win whichever you pick. That's why we can tell you the truth.
Choose IELTS if you want one well-understood test that covers study (Academic) and PR (General Training), or you prefer face-to-face speaking.
Choose PTE if you want fast (~48-hour) computer-scored results — just book the RIGHT one: PTE Core for PR, PTE Academic for university.

Acceptance shifts by route and over time (e.g. PTE Core for Canada PR) — always confirm the current status with the official body before you book.
Neither is universally easier — the easier test is the one that matches YOUR strengths. PTE suits people who prefer a computer/typing format, strategy, and no human examiner; IELTS suits people more confident face-to-face, and its independent per-skill scoring means a weak Speaking score doesn't drag your Writing. One honest catch: at the IELTS 7.0 level PTE's overall equivalent (≈63–70) can look lower while its Speaking/Writing component bars run higher — "feels easier overall" can hide tougher per-skill requirements.
