Look at what officialdom actually says is different about IELTS for UKVI, and you will notice something odd: almost none of it is about the test itself. The official UK page talks about where you sit it and what it is accepted for — not about different questions, different timing or different marking. Every officially verified difference we could find is logistics, not content. That is why this page is short. The test preparation is the same preparation. The booking is where people go wrong.
Here is the official framing, verbatim from ielts.org's United Kingdom page:
"IELTS tests are accepted by the UKVI as proof of English proficiency for those wishing to live, work, or study in the UK."
And the delivery condition, from the same page — UKVI tests
"must be taken in person at an official IELTS test centre,"
though "in some countries we offer the option of taking the IELTS UKVI (Academic) test online."
The failure
The mistake this page prevents is booking the wrong product. It comes in two forms.
Form one: sitting regular IELTS when your visa route needs the UKVI version. The UKVI variants are booked as distinct products — IDP India, for example, lists "IELTS on Computer" and "IELTS on Computer for UKVI" as separate items at separate prices. If your route requires the UKVI test and you sat the standard one, the certificate you hold is not the certificate you were asked for, and the fee is spent.
Form two: sitting IELTS Online (the at-home test) for any visa purpose. ielts.org is blunt about its own at-home product:
"IELTS Online is not accepted by governments and organisations for immigration or professional registration purposes."
Which test and which score your route requires is set by UK immigration rules, not by IELTS — and not by this page. We do not give immigration advice. Before you book anything, check the UK government's own guidance on gov.uk for your specific visa route, then book exactly what it names.
The three UKVI variants
ielts.org lists three types for UK visa purposes: IELTS UKVI (Academic), IELTS UKVI (General Training) and IELTS Life Skills. Note the results line: 1–5 days for UKVI Academic and GT is the same window ielts.org gives for standard IELTS on computer — one more sign that the machinery behind the test is shared.
What we could not verify — read this before you rely on the title
We found no official sentence stating that UKVI test content, format and scoring are identical to standard IELTS. Prep sites state it constantly; our verified fact base does not contain it, so we will not assert it either. The pattern of official differences — all delivery, none content — points that way, but a pattern is not a quote. Confirm on ielts.org or with your test centre.
Also unverified, so not asserted here:
- What IELTS Life Skills actually contains — tasks, timing, levels beyond the "(A1 and B1)" label on IDP India's fee page. If Life Skills is your route, get the format from ielts.org directly.
- UK (GBP) fees — no official figure verified. The INR gap above (~250 rupees between standard and UKVI computer tests) is one country's pricing on one date, not a rule.
- Which countries offer UKVI (Academic) online, or One Skill Retake for UKVI — officialdom says only "some countries" and "selected locations". Ask your centre.
- Whether the online UKVI (Academic) option satisfies your visa route — ielts.org says the at-home IELTS Online product "is not accepted for immigration purposes" while the UK page offers a UKVI (Academic) test "online" in some countries. We cannot reconcile these two official lines for you — quote them both to your test centre and get the answer for your route in writing.
What actually costs you
- Booking standard IELTS when your route names IELTS for UKVI — the fee is gone and the clock restarts.
- Booking IELTS Online for a visa: "not accepted... for immigration purposes", in ielts.org's own words.
- Assuming Life Skills is a shorter, easier IELTS — its content is not verified here; check before you choose it.
- Planning on the Writing on Paper option — it is not available for UKVI tests.
- Taking any prep site's word (including ours) on what your visa route requires instead of gov.uk's.
